Every year, at some point in the lead-up to Christmas, my mother always says "I'm not going to any trouble this year". Which would be fine, I guess, if she were known for consistently going to trouble, but my mother hasn't been to any trouble for Christmas since 1975, so saying so is kind of obsolete. And annoying. Anyway, this annual proclamation is usually accompanied by a request to my sister and me that we buy something for our respective children on behalf of her and my father. A few minutes ago my sister and I had our pre-Christmas organisational briefing.
Me: What did you get for the kids from Mum and Dad?
Her: Books. What about you?
Me: Yeah, books as well. Just checking. It would suck quite a bit if Nana and Granddad got my kids books and your kids, oh I don't know...bikes.
Her: Heh. I might try that next year. What did you get Mum and Dad?
Me: Warehouse vouchers and shortbread. What about you?
Her: A flat-screen TV.
